The great Site5 Migration has Began

Filed under: Complaint — bigred @ 12:21 pm

Awhile pack, I was complaining about my host where this blog is sitting was crap.  It might still be crap, I’m not sure.  Today it was a little slow, but were hoping for speed improvements.  All servers from www.Site5.com will be moving to ThePlanet.com.  The move was announced in April, but the migration just began October 20th.   I’m writing this to let you all know, I’m not sure the date and time of the move, but its never good, and if I disappear of the face of the planet, blame it on my hosting company.  Also they are now running 750 GB of space for $8/month.    (they raised their prices :(    )

You can take a tour of the data center that http://bigredsplace.com will soon be sitting in @ http://www.theplanet.com/tour/default.html

Haunted Corn Maze Pains

Filed under: General, humor — bigred @ 12:22 pm

This past weekend, I spent Saturday night volunteering at a corn maze.  The basics are wear black and a mask, hide, and then surprise.  Seams simple in practice.  I was at this maze from around 6:30-11:30.  I was dead tired by the end of the night.  The unseasonably warm weather didn’t help.  I was burning up hot and sweating.  I couldn’t breath through my mask and only about half way through I was relieved with a water bottle.

The maze was a pretty good size with over 1/2 mile of area to walk.  I had to cover a huge area which made it entertaining and tiring.  People would funnel through a certain area and were complaining about no one working this area and not being scared and I would say about 95% of the time I could catch them off guard and in mid sentence.  I had people that even thanked me saying I got them good.  Then of course you had the 6-7th grade boys who just were screwing around and wouldn’t leave the maze.  They even tried to scare the workers.  Never worked though.   The best was the people that would see me and call me out.  I then had an opportunity to swing around the catacomb of corn and get to a secondary hiding place.  I sure as heck would get them the second time though and they loved it.

Overall a great time.  The problem was LOTS of work.  I found myself squatting and popping up constantly.  This brought about the WORST PAIN ever in my legs.  I guess all those squats did my thighs in.  Not use to working those, and now I find myself having issues with sitting, standing, steps, and just walking.  I look like an old man limping around now.  I hope the beer can numb that pain.

Microsoft Router MN-700 Hack – Success!!!

Filed under: Self Help, Technology, WOW, programming — bigred @ 11:44 am

Now that I have my 360, I’ve been hooked to live.  Unfortunately that has meant a cord running all the way from my central router to my TV.  A solution would be to set up wireless.  Luckily for me there was a hack to add on a new firmware on existing routers and turn them into wireless bridges, but the unfortunate problem was the Microsoft router MN-700 can not be hacked, UNLESS you take advantage of the JTAG connector.

Basically I took a useless router laying around and for a little time and $5.29 in parts, I created an amazing router that supports so many new features and works better.  Of course the Best feature is being able to use it as a wireless 4 port bridge.  It involved soldering on a jtag connector and running software to create bin files, erasing the old boatloader, loading a new bootloader, and then updating to the dd-wrt firmware.  It was taking around 12 hours to flash on a windows machine, and it kept messing up about 50-70% the way through flashing.  I heard the rumor that Linux would flash much faster.  Sure enough, I created a pendrivelinux version of Ubuntu, then tried to compile, and flash from the pen drive.  It took only about 15 minutes and I was done.  Able to de-solder, and hook up to the 360.

dd-wrt has the how to how to make this project work.  This also works for certain linksys routers too.

Xbox 360 Bandwagon

Filed under: Video Games, microsoft — bigred @ 2:52 pm

Well I held out for quite awhile and couldn’t wait any longer.  I purchased my Xbox 360 on Halo3 day.  Ya, I’m one of those that helped boost the sales of Xbox.  It really came down to a random deal that I heard of through http://slickdeals.com .  The retail store Meijer, found in the Midwest(MI,OH, IL,IN,KY), was offering an online deal for 20% off the 360.  That meant $70 off.  I couldn’t resist.

So off I went to the website.   All I had to do was add to cart, then enter online promo code.  Well the problem started there.  They were “OUT OF STOCK”.  The only way you could find a 360 was using a direct link to the product.  They actually pulled the standard link from there main website.

So, I walked over to Meijer from my place.  (a good 3 minute walk for me).  There in the glass elevator…err glass case, I found 3 Xbox’s.  I asked the Electronic department if they could honor the deal.
“Well I don’t know anything about it and we can’t honor our online prices.”

I then headed up to the front of the store.  I asked the service department.
“We can’t Honor our online prices in the store”.  At this point I was thinking WTF?!?!  I tell the girl( who is much younger than me and more interested in twisting her gum in her fingers)

“You guys have more than 3 in stock, and none in stock online.  You guys are advertising a deal that you can’t get a rain check for.  That’s stupid.  Why not just get me one sitting in the store since you HAVE THEM IN STOCK!!!”

She ends up calling THE store manager, who knew about the online deal and was willing to honor it.

WOOOOT!!!!!!!

Since then, I’ve been so crazy on LIVE.  I never in my imagination thought I’d enjoy HALO3 so much.  It’s a hit out the park and then some.  The online play is amazing and doesn’t get boring after 3 days or 3 weeks.  Sure the hype will go down, but with the achievements and ranking systems online, it gives you a drive to want to keep playing to get better than your foes.

Bottom line, when you kids wine this Christmas that they want a 360, BUY THEM ONE.
