slide project

Filed under: Photos — bigred @ 7:47 pm

I’ve started the great slide scanning project.? I’ve been lucky to have connections that have let me borrow a Nikon film/slide scanner.? This scanner retails for around $3000 (US).? I have about 400 slides to scan in.? The scanner and software is great.? The problem is, its takes 3-5 min.? This is a LONG boring time of placing a slide in and waiting for it to scan.? That time is jusf for the scanning, but now I’ll have to go through and edit each photo.? When all done, i’ll have it put on dvd with music.

google’s new photo site watch that fine print

Filed under: Complaint, google — bigred @ 8:57 am

Google stickes again, with offering a new photo site. This is another online upload share/print photo site. http://picasa.google.com I liked the idea of easy intergration and all the coolness that comes with google. But then I read the fine print. The site is fine if you don’t mind your work being shared with everyone and maybe even sold for someone elses use. I guess I’m just not thrilled with other people reproducing my work without my knowledge. For now I’m going to stick with Gallery2. I may play around with the new picasa but I don’t think I’ll use it full time unless they change these terms.

Linksys hacking

Filed under: Technology — bigred @ 7:31 pm

Not really hacking on my part, but just uploading a non Linksys firmware. I got tired of my damn router not working like it should be. (IE some laptops did not work on certain websites) Luckily for me, my Inspiron 6000 will work with and AP. But certain people living with me or next to me were complaining that certain sites were not working. I then decided to head over to linksysinfo.org. That website is full of forums that give you great advice on loading different firmwares. The older the linksys the better. My 54gs was a version 2 which meant it could run an imbedded Linux on it. Newer revs. of the router don’t use Linux, but just a week or so back a new firmware was created for those users.

I went with the DD-WRT firmware. The option to boost the wireless signal is built in. I can go from the stock 18mw, all the way up to 150mw. AT 150mw, you could hurt someone and is recommended for large outdoor hot spots only.

Other nice features are the fact that it gives you live stats of any clients connected to it with out the need of refreshing and it gives there wireless strength.

I encourage everyone to give it a try, its really easy, just make sure you load the firmwares in the order they tell you are you might “brick” it.

Microsoft Live has got my Attention

Filed under: Technology — bigred @ 1:38 pm

Microsoft has still got it.? That??s my initial thoughts on Microsoft??s ??LIVE?? software.? http://live.com ?is pretty awesome.? They appear to be using some sort of AJAX or ASP.NET to keep the search page a single page that just keeps on scrolling.? This saves on the loading time from going to page to page.? I predict Google to follow this soon.

Live??s ability to include rss feeds, your live calendar, your live mail, and other live content is pretty nice to have.? I know they??ve had these features and so have other companies, but it just has the smooth feeling that has been missing for years.? The ability to click and drag content around to customize is another feature making the ease of use excellent for none savvy users.? Microsoft is between a rock and a hard place.? How do they make their software easy and pretty to use (like Apple??s OSX) and at the same time keep the hard core features that the ??old school?? users of Microsoft like.

The live mail is awesome too.? I actually find it better than gmail in many ways. When they find the ability to sync your PDA with the online live account, I??ll be happy.

With it being in beta I??m pretty impressed.? I look forward to seeing their improvements and can??t wait to see the finished product.? I may be migrating from gmail to live if it works out well enough.
